Hiring for four positions that will last up to four months.

The Community

The City of Blaine, Washington, is a coastal community of 5,000 people, with a unique location on the US/Canada border. Blaine offers a small town environment just outside a major metropolitan area. Blaine is only 45 minutes from downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, one of the world’s most beautiful and dynamic cities. All major services are available in Bellingham, WA, only 30 minutes away, including shopping, theatres, dining, three colleges, a hospital and an airport. Interstate-5 provides easy access to Seattle, WA, two hours to the south.

Blaine offers access to unlimited outdoor recreation, with the inland marine waters of the Puget Sound and Georgia Straight for boating, fishing, and day trips to the San Juan Islands. The Cascade Mountains are less than an hour’s drive, offering hiking, skiing, camping, hunting and fishing. Locals like to boast that they can ski in the morning and sea kayak or golf in the afternoon.

The Position

The Seasonal Maintenance Worker performs routine manual labor tasks and reoccurring maintenance with the water, storm, parks, street, and facilities groups within Blaine Public Works. This position requires knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment to perform and complete assigned tasks. Candidates for this job must be able to get along with others and work as a member of a team. Candidates must be capable of working independently without direct supervision in the field.

Essential Job Functions

Duties for these positions may include but are not limited to: performing routine tasks such as weed-eating, raking, mowing, shoveling and other means of mechanical vegetation control; litter pick-up; pothole patching, pavement striping; building and other public facility repair and maintenance; traffic control in a work zone of a city right of way; cleaning and painting of fire hydrants and/or roadway curbs; trail repair and maintenance; performing other assigned duties of an equally complex nature.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

    • Must be 18 and have a valid Washington driver’s license at time of hire.
    • Driving record free of any significant violations.
    • Candidate should possess a mechanical aptitude and knowledge of/experience with relevant hand and power tools.
    • Not required but First Aid/CPR and Flagging Certifications are preferred.
    • Pass appropriate background checks.
Work Conditions and Physical Requirements

The duties and responsibilities of this position are primarily performed in an outdoor environment. Performance of the position generally requires in a varied outdoor environment such as all weather conditions, all noise levels, hazardous conditions, and on a full range of outdoor work surfaces. The daily use of protective clothing and/or personal protective devices is required. This job requires the ability to drive various automobiles/vans/trucks.

Physical requirements include strength and ability sufficient to perform manual labor for extended periods under dirty and uncomfortable situations and in all types of weather. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, drive, type and repetitive hand motions including using hands and fingers to handle, touch, feel, or operate objects, tools, controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move 50 pounds and to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include far and near vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
